The study employed a descriptive method, which involved collecting and analyzing data to describe the current state of reference services.

The population of this study consisted of all reference service users in the North Sumatra Province Library and Archives Office in 2016, totaling 4,310 individuals. A sample of 98 users was selected using the Action Sampling technique, which is based on coincidence. This sampling technique ensures that the sample is representative of the population by using the Slovin formula.

Results

The results of the study showed that most respondents (52%) utilized reference collection services in the library only 1-2 times a week. The main reason behind this frequency is that users have other activities that they need to attend to. However, the existing reference collection is considered adequate and quite helpful in meeting the user's information needs. This suggests that although the frequency of reference service use is not too high, the quality and relevance of the collection provided still contribute positively to the user.
