Introduction

Soil is a complex ecosystem that plays a vital role in supporting plant growth and agricultural productivity. The chemical properties of soil, such as pH, organic matter content, and nutrient retention, are crucial factors that influence soil fertility and productivity. One of the key chemical properties of soil is the Zero Point of Charge (ZPC), which is the pH at which the soil surface charge becomes zero. In this study, we will explore the relationship between ZPC and various soil chemical properties in Andisol in the lowlands and highlands.

Background

Andisol is a type of soil that is commonly found in tropical regions, including Indonesia. It is characterized by its high organic matter content, low pH, and high nutrient retention capacity. The ZPC of Andisol is an important factor that influences its chemical properties and behavior. In this study, we will investigate the relationship between ZPC and other soil chemical properties, such as organic C, pH, P retention, and clay content, in lowland and highland Andisol.

Methodology

This study was conducted in the Laboratory of Chemistry/Soil Fertility and the Central Lab of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra (USU), Medan. The study area consisted of two types of Andisol: lowland and highland. Soil samples were collected from each location at two different depths: 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm. The ZPC, organic C, pH, P retention, and clay content of each soil sample were analyzed using standard laboratory procedures.

Results

The results of this study showed that there are significant differences in ZPC values between lowland and highland Andisol. In the lowland Andisol, the ZPC value at a depth of 0-20 cm was lower compared to a depth of 20-40 cm. Conversely, in the highland Andisol, the ZPC value at a depth of 0-20 cm was also lower than the depth of 20-40 cm. However, at a depth of 0-20 cm, the lowland ZPC Andisol was higher than the highland Andisol, while at a depth of 20-40 cm, the ZPC value in the lowland Andisol was also higher than the highland Andisol.

In addition to ZPC, the results also showed significant differences in organic C values between lowland and highland Andisol. In the lowland Andisol, the organic C level at a depth of 0-20 cm was higher than the depth of 20-40 cm. On the other hand, in the highland Andisol, the level of organic C at a depth of 0-20 cm was lower compared to a depth of 20-40 cm. In other words, although at the same depth of 0-20 cm, the lowland Andisol organic levels were lower than the highland Andisol, and the same thing applies to a depth of 20-40 cm.

The results also showed significant differences in pH values between lowland and highland Andisol. In the lowland Andisol, the soil pH at a depth of 0-20 cm was lower than the depth of 20-40 cm. This also applies to the highlands Andisol. However, at the same depth, which is 0-20 cm, the lowland Andisol pH was higher than the highland Andisol, and the same pattern was also seen at a depth of 20-40 cm.

P retention (%) is another parameter that shows the difference between the two types of Andisol. In the lowland Andisol, the P retention value at a depth of 0-20 cm was higher than the depth of 20-40 cm. Similar conditions were also seen in the highlands Andisol. However, at the same depth, which is 0-20 cm, the value of the lowland Andisol retention was lower than the highland Andisol, and this pattern remained consistent at a depth of 20-40 cm.

Finally, clay levels also showed significant differences. In lowland Andisol, clay content at a depth of 0-20 cm was lower than a depth of 20-40 cm. However, in the highland Andisol, clay content at a depth of 0-20 cm was higher than the depth of 20-40 cm. This shows that at a depth of 0-20 cm, the clay content in the lowland Andisol was lower than the highland Andisol, while at a depth of 20-40 cm, the lowland Andisol clay levels were higher than the highland Andisol.

Discussion

The results of this study showed that there are significant differences in ZPC values between lowland and highland Andisol. These differences are likely due to the different physical and chemical factors that influence soil formation in each location. The lowland Andisol, which is characterized by its high organic matter content and low pH, has a higher ZPC value than the highland Andisol.
