However, the labor process does not always run normally. In some cases, childbirth can be considered pathological. The incidence of pathological labor can be influenced by several factors, including the characteristics of the mother, the state of the baby, and the treatment provided by health workers when labor takes place.

In Indonesia, the maternal mortality rate (MMR) reaches 307 per 100,000 live births, which is higher compared to other ASEAN countries. Mother's death is closely related to pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperal period. In Sari Mutiara Hospital, around 67% of the total 577 births are cases of pathological labor. This figure is much higher than the government's target which stipulates that the incidence of pathological labor in private hospitals should only be 15%. The high incidence of pathological labor in Sari Mutiara Hospital highlights the need for a thorough investigation into the factors contributing to this issue.

Research Purpose and Methodology

This study aims to explore the relationship between mother's characteristics, types of care received, and pathological labor events in Sari Mutiara Hospital in 2007. Using analytical research design and cross-sectional approaches, this study involved 40 samples of mothers giving birth. Data is collected through interviews and patient status, and analyzed univariate, bivariate, and multivariate using logistical regression. The research design and methodology used in this study provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to pathological labor in Sari Mutiara Hospital.

The results of the analysis show that there is no significant relationship between age, education level, and mother's parity with the incidence of pathological labor. However, the behavior of the mother and care received in the phase of stage one to fourth stage has a close relationship with the incidence of pathological labor. Handling that is not optimal as long as each phase in the labor process is one of the causes of increased risk of complications in the mother and fetus. The findings of this study suggest that the behavior of the mother and the quality of care received during labor play a crucial role in determining the outcome of labor.

In this situation, it is very important for health workers to be more patient and thorough in providing care. If the delivery assistant, both those who work in hospitals, maternity clinics, private midwife practices, and puskesmas, can implement normal delivery care (APN), it is expected that pathological labor events can be minimized. The implementation of APN requires a thorough understanding of the labor process and the ability to provide optimal care to mothers during labor.
