The Perception of the University of North Sumatra's Lecturer on the Open Access Policy of the Institutional Repository

Introduction

The University of North Sumatra (USU) has been actively promoting the open access policy of its institutional repository (RI) to increase the visibility and accessibility of scientific research. This study aimed to investigate the perception of USU lecturers on the open access policy of the RI. By using a quantitative descriptive method, this study involved all active USU lecturers, totaling 1599 people, with a sample size of 94 lecturers randomly selected through simple random sampling. The data was collected through a questionnaire consisting of 23 questions, distributed via email and WhatsApp.

Understanding of the Institutional Repository

The results of this study show that the institutional repository has been well understood by most USU lecturers. Almost all lecturers have accessed the RI, and the delivery of scientific papers to RI has become a normal practice. This is supported by a good understanding of RI content, where the majority of lecturers optimally use Indonesian content. The use of the Republic of Indonesia is also widespread, with almost all lecturers using it as a reference for students in completing the final project, as a source of information, and as a teaching guide.

Understanding of Open Access

The understanding of open access is also classified as good among USU lecturers. Most lecturers use open access available in RI, and they see open access as an effective way to get information easily. This is evidenced by almost all lecturers who agree with the Indonesian open access policy.

Application of the Open Access Policy

The application of the Republic of Indonesia's open access policy is considered good by USU lecturers. This policy is considered to have a significant influence on scientific communication and support for the development of science. Most lecturers feel the benefits of this policy.

USU can provide incentives for lecturers who publish their scientific work in RI, such as awards or promotions.

Increasing Easy Access

RI in USU can continue to be improved to make it easier to access for lecturers, such as by adding new features that are more sophisticated.

Building Collaboration

USU can build collaboration with other universities to share experiences and build stronger open access ecosystems.

Conclusion

This study provides a positive picture of the acceptance of open access policies for institutional repository in USU. By continuing to improve the socialization program, provide incentives, and build collaboration, it is hoped that the implementation of this policy can continue to increase and contribute to the advancement of science in Indonesia.
