Understanding Child Sexual Violence

Sexual violence against children is a serious issue that affects millions of children worldwide. It is a deviation from sexual intercourse that includes various actions ranging from touch to sexual exploitation, which has an adverse impact and destroys the welfare of children. Globally, one in five girls and one in 13 boys experience sexual violence. In Indonesia, North Sumatra Province is ranked third in cases of sexual violence. This article aims to show the prevalence of children's sexual violence that occurred in the Department of Forensic RSUD Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai during the period January 2017 to December 2021.

Methodology and Data Collection

This study uses a descriptive research design with a cross-sectional approach, where sampling techniques are totally carried out using data visum et repertum. The data collected is then processed and presented in the form of frequency distribution tables through univariate analysis. The research design was chosen to provide a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence of child sexual violence in the study area.

Results and Findings

The results of the study showed that during the period of January 2017 to December 2021, there were 38 victims of child sexual violence. The proportion of male victims was 55.3%, while female victims accounted for 44.7%. In terms of age group, 52.6% of victims were aged 13-17 years, 39.5% were aged 6-12 years, and 7.9% were aged 0-5 years.

From a physical examination, it was found that 34.2% of victims showed signs of sexual intercourse, while 55.3% did not show these signs. Extraragenital injuries were found in 23.7% of victims, with details of 44.4% experiencing bruises, 7.9% experiencing tears, and 5.3% suffering scratches.

In terms of the relationship between victims and perpetrators, as many as 76.3% are family relations, 15.8% is a relationship in the family, and 7.9% is a relationship in the institution.

Discussion and Conclusion

From this analysis, it can be concluded that the prevalence of children's sexual violence in Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai shows significant fluctuations from year to year. This indicates that the problem of children's sexual violence in the region requires serious attention from the government, health institutions, and the community as a whole. Effective prevention and handling efforts must be immediately implemented to protect children and provide support for victims of sexual violence.

Success in overcoming this issue does not only depend on medical services, but also in cooperation between institutions, public awareness campaigns, and psychological support for the children of victims. With the right steps, it is expected that the prevalence of sexual violence against children can be reduced and the welfare of children can be better maintained.

This study has several limitations that should be noted. The study only focused on the Department of Forensic RSUD Dr. R.M. Djoelham Binjai and did not include other institutions in the study area. The study also only collected data from January 2017 to December 2021 and did not include data from previous years.
