Introduction

Uterine cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer experienced by women, especially in line with changes in disease patterns in the community. In the midst of the decline in the incidence of infectious diseases, we are now dealing with increased cases of non-communicable and degenerative diseases, including cervical cancer. Various risk factors contribute to the development of this cancer, such as the first age of marriage that is less than 20 years, a large number of children, smoking habits, and low socioeconomic status. Understanding the risk factors associated with cervical cancer is crucial in developing effective prevention strategies.

Background

Research conducted on 180 respondents, consisting of 90 cervical cancer patients and 90 controls, at Pirngadi Hospital Medan during the January to December 2003 period, aimed at identifying the relationship between the risk factors and the incidence of cervical cancer. Through a case study design of control and secondary data analysis from medical records, researchers conduct descriptive analysis, bivariant, and multivariant using computer software. The results showed a significant relationship at the 95% confidence level to several risk variables. Among these are the first marriage age of less than 20 years with Odds Ratio (OR) of 4,375, parity (the number of children) also has an OR of 4,375, and the level of education with OR is 2,012. These findings highlight the importance of addressing these risk factors in the prevention of cervical cancer.
