Introduction

In the 21st century and the industrial era 4.0, education has faced significant disruption, especially related to e-learning technology. This is a major concern for the university, as the highest educational institution. The rapid advancement of technology has led to a shift in the way students learn and interact with educational content. As a result, universities are under pressure to adapt and innovate their teaching methods to meet the changing needs of students.

The Need for Disruption in Higher Education

The traditional teaching methods used in higher education institutions are no longer effective in meeting the needs of students in the digital age. Students now prefer a more interactive approach and sophisticated technology in the teaching and learning process. The use of e-learning technology has created new opportunities for students to learn at their own pace and interact with educational content in a more engaging way.

The Role of K-Means Clustering in Analyzing Higher Education Disruption

K-Means Clustering is a data mining technique used to group similar data points into clusters. In the context of this study, the K-Means Clustering algorithm is used to analyze the perspectives of students of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of North Sumatra on changes in the learning process. The algorithm is used to identify patterns and similarities between the data collected, which helps in understanding student preferences.

The Elbow Method Modification

The Elbow method is a technique used to determine the optimal number of clusters in K-Means Clustering. However, traditional approaches often produce unsatisfactory results, especially if the cluster is randomly determined. By modifying the Elbow method, researchers can identify patterns and similarities between the data collected, which helps in understanding student preferences.

Methodology

A total of 200 students were involved in a survey conducted using a questionnaire provided on the website. The results of the questionnaire were then tested for validity and reliability using SPSS Statistics Data Editor. The K-Means Clustering algorithm was used to analyze the data collected, and the Elbow method modification was used to determine the optimal number of clusters.

Results

The results of this study indicate that students of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of North Sumatra want innovation in the learning process. This reflects the demands of the times that require renewal and development of educational methods that are more in line with current technology. Educational institutions are expected to not only apply new technology, but also build a more adaptive and responsive curriculum to the needs of students.

Finally, the study did not consider the impact of other factors, such as the quality of teaching and the availability of resources, on the effectiveness of e-learning technology.
