Analysis of Catch and Patterns of the Catching Season of Blue Flying Resources (Decapterus Macarellus) at the Belawan Ocean Fisheries Port of North Sumatra Province

Introduction

The Blue Flying Fish, also known as Mackerel Scad (Decapterus Macarellus), is one of the most dominant pelagic fish species caught at the Belawan Ocean Fisheries Port (PPS) in North Sumatra, Indonesia. With a significant share of the total catch, this fish has become a crucial component of the marine ecosystem in the region. In this study, we aim to analyze the catch and patterns of the catching season of Blue Flying Resources at PPS Belawan, with a focus on the analysis conducted from June to July 2020.

Background

The Belawan Ocean Fisheries Port is one of the largest fishing ports in Indonesia, with a significant share of the country's total fish catch. The port is known for its rich marine biodiversity, with a variety of fish species, including the Blue Flying Fish. The Blue Flying Fish is a pelagic species that is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. It is a highly valued species for its meat, which is rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids.

Methodology

In this study, we used a Schaefer model to analyze the catch and patterns of the catching season of Blue Flying Resources at PPS Belawan. The Schaefer model is a widely used model in fisheries management that provides an overview of the maximum sustainable potential of the fish resources captured. We also used the Catching Season Index (IMP) over the past five years to analyze the seasonal patterns of the Blue Flying Fish catch.

Results

The results of the analysis showed that the maximum potential for the sustainable Blue Flying Fish in PPS Belawan was 8,589,850 tons per year, with an optimum capture effort of 6,576 trips per year. The pattern of the Blue Flying Fishing Season also reflects a significant seasonal shift, with the catch season taking place in January, March, May, June, August, and November. From these months, November became the month with the peak of arrest, where the IMP value reached 116.49%. This shows that Blue Flying Fish are very abundant in the month, mainly due to supporting environmental conditions, such as water temperature and optimal feed availability. Conversely, in February, the lowest IMP value was recorded at 89.35%, which coincided with the western season where the capture conditions were less profitable.

This analysis is important for sustainable fisheries management, especially to prevent excessive capture that can interfere with marine ecosystems. By understanding the seasonal patterns and the sustainable potential of the Blue Flying Fish, fishermen can plan their capture efforts more effectively, thus minimizing the risk of overfishing and helping to maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem.

Conclusion

Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that Blue Flying Fish have a significant potential in Belawan PPS with the pattern of catching season that can be utilized optimally. Determination of the right time to catch fish is very important in order to support the sustainability of fisheries resources. Joint efforts from the government, fishermen, and other stakeholders are needed to implement the capture capture strategy to maintain the sustainability of the Blue Fly Fish Resources in the future.
