Introduction

In the world of computer networks, graph theory has numerous real-world applications. One of them is in designing intranet networks. The graph theory is used to represent every device connected in the network. This study utilizes the concept of graph theory to design intranet computer networks in the University of North Sumatra, with a focus on the backbone network of the Faculty of Engineering which has several access points. This network will be connected to an optic fiber cable planted underground. Optimization is a crucial factor in the network design process. The use of cables with a minimum length not only reduces installation costs but also increases network efficiency.

In theory, the minimum length between two points can be achieved with a straight line, but the conditions on the ground are often far more complex. Cable installation underground often faces various obstacles, such as buildings and other infrastructure. It is not possible to drill through all these obstacles, so the cable must be bent in order to pass it. This study aims to complete the challenge by simulating the shortest route calculation process that connects each access point at the Faculty of Engineering, University of North Sumatra by avoiding obstacles. This system will apply the minimum spanning tree method using a Prim Algorithm.

Analysis and Explanation

The Prim Algorithm is one of the effective methods in finding a minimum spanning tree (MST) on a directed graph. In the context of computer networks, MST is a subgraph that connects all access points to the total shortest cable length. This is very important to reduce installation costs and also to minimize the use of materials. By using the Prim Algorithm, we can ensure that each access point is optimally connected to the optical fiber cable, avoiding obstacles that may exist.

One of the first steps in this process is to build graph representations of existing networks. Each access point in the Faculty of Engineering will be represented as a node (node), while the optical fiber cable that might connect it will be the side (edge) in the graph. By implementing a Prim Algorithm, the system will iterate iteratively select the side with the smallest weight that connects the node that has been connected to the unfinished node, until all the node is connected without forming a cycle.

The importance of this approach is not only limited to cost savings, but also affects the maintenance and management of networks in the future. Networks that are designed efficiently will be easier to be upgraded and maintained, because the installed cable does not interfere with existing structures. With this simulation, the Faculty of Engineering, University of North Sumatra can make better decisions in their intranet network planning, given all the obstacles that might occur.
