Application of Analysis of Main Components to Identify Factors Influencing Childbearing Age Couples into Family Planning Acceptors in the Working Area of the Simpang Limun City Health Center in Medan 2018

Introduction

The Simpang Limun City Health Center in Medan reported a low rate of family planning acceptors among childbearing age couples (PUS) in 2017, with only 7.3% of the fertile age pair actively participating in the Family Planning Program (KB). This study aims to identify the factors that influence PUS to become family planning acceptors in the region. The analysis of main components (PCA) is a method used to reduce multiple variables into several more concise factors without eliminating existing variables. This study uses a cross-sectional research design with PCA followed by multiple logistics regression analysis to identify the factors that influence PUS to become family planning acceptors.

Methodology

This study was conducted in the working area of the Simpang Limun City Health Center in Medan in 2018. A total of 60 mothers from PUS were chosen as samples of a total of 3,346 PUS available. The variables tested include knowledge of family planning, education level, wife age, number of lives who are still alive, economic status, access to health services, the use of mass media, support of partners, the role of health workers, culture, social environment, and religious factors. The PCA method was used to reduce the multiple variables into several more concise factors.

Results

The results showed that there were four main factors formed from the twelve variables tested:

Internal Factors and Family Planning Access: This factor includes aspects of knowledge about KB and accessibility to health services. It is essential to note that knowledge about family planning and access to health services are crucial in motivating PUS to make decisions related to the use of family planning.
Factors of the Role of the Social Environment: This factor includes support from friends, family, and surrounding communities. The results showed that the role of the social environment has a significant influence on the PUS decision to become a family planning acceptor, with the value of p = 0,0001 (p <α). This indicates that support from the social environment is very important in motivating PUS to make decisions related to the use of family planning.
Family Factor Factor: This factor touches the situation and condition of the family in receiving the KB program. It is essential to note that the family situation and condition can influence the decision of PUS to become family planning acceptors.
Other Factors: This factor includes other variables that were not included in the previous factors.

Discussion

The results of this study show that the role of the social environment has a significant influence on the PUS decision to become a family planning acceptor. This indicates that support from the social environment is very important in motivating PUS to make decisions related to the use of family planning. The results also show that knowledge about family planning and access to health services are crucial in motivating PUS to make decisions related to the use of family planning.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended to the Simpang Limun Health Center to increase socialization regarding family planning, especially to the husband of Pus. Dissemination of information through promotional media about family planning must also be done intensively in this region so that more couples know the benefits and access of family planning programs. In addition, further research is advised to apply other further analysis after analysis of factors to deepen understanding of the dynamics that affect family planning acceptors.

Recommendations

Increase Socialization Regarding Family Planning: The Simpang Limun Health Center should increase socialization regarding family planning, especially to the husband of Pus.
Dissemination of Information: Dissemination of information through promotional media about family planning must be done intensively in this region so that more couples know the benefits and access of family planning programs.
Further Research: Further research is advised to apply other further analysis after analysis of factors to deepen understanding of the dynamics that affect family planning acceptors.

Limitations

This study has several limitations. Firstly, the sample size was relatively small, with only 60 mothers from PUS chosen as samples. Secondly, the study only focused on the working area of the Simpang Limun City Health Center in Medan, and the results may not be generalizable to other regions. Finally, the study only used PCA and multiple logistics regression analysis, and other methods may be used to identify the factors that influence PUS to become family planning acceptors.
