The Effect of Providing Fertilizers N, P, K, and Mg According to Production Target and Nutrient Index on Corn Production (Zea Mays L.)

Corn is one of the most widely cultivated crops in the world, and its production is crucial for food security and economic growth. In Indonesia, corn is a significant crop, and its production is influenced by various factors, including fertilization. The provision of fertilizers N, P, K, and Mg is essential for corn growth, as these nutrients play a vital role in plant development. However, the optimal dose of fertilizers and the interaction between production targets and nutrient indexes are still unclear. This study aims to investigate the effect of providing fertilizers N, P, K, and Mg according to production target and nutrient index on corn production.

Research Methodology

This study was conducted on Jalan Eka Warni Medan Johor, North Sumatra, from July to November 2019. The design used was a Complete Randomized Design (RAL), which was further tested by the Duncan distance test. There were two treatment factors in this study:

Production Target with Fertilizer Dose (P):
- P1 = 8 tons/ha (Urea 9.7 g; SP36 6.1 g; KCl 5.4 g; Dolomite 4.5 g): This treatment represents a low production target, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth but not maximize production.
- P2 = 12 tons/ha (Urea 14.58 g; SP36 9.1 g; KCl 8 g; Dolomite 6.8 g): This treatment represents a moderate production target, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth and maximize production.
- P3 = 16 tons/ha (Urea 19.5 g; SP36 12.1 g; KCl 10.8 g; Dolomite 9.1 g): This treatment represents a high production target, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth and maximize production.
- P4 = 20 tons/ha (Urea 24.3 g; SP36 15.2 g; KCl 13.4 g; Dolomite 11.3 g): This treatment represents an extremely high production target, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth and maximize production.
Nutrient Index (N) Land:
- N1 = 0.8 (80% standard nutrient index): This treatment represents a low nutrient index, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth but not maximize production.
- N2 = 0.9 (90% standard nutrient index): This treatment represents a moderate nutrient index, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth and maximize production.
- N3 = 1 (standard nutrient index): This treatment represents a standard nutrient index, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth and maximize production.
- N4 = 1.1 (110% standard nutrient index): This treatment represents a high nutrient index, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth and maximize production.
- N5 = 1.2 (120% standard nutrient index): This treatment represents an extremely high nutrient index, with a fertilizer dose that is expected to support plant growth and maximize production.

The corn variety used in this study was BISI-18.

Results and Discussion

The results showed that the highest dose of N, P, K, and Mg fertilizers was found in P4 treatment, which was 229.7 g per plant or equivalent to 15.31 tons per hectare. However, the soil nutrient index did not show a significant effect on the production of corn plants.

The best interaction between production targets and nutrient indexes to increase factors of production lies in P4N2 treatment. This interaction produced wet and dry weight from cobs, wet and dry weight of seeds, as well as optimal wet and dry weight of clobes, with total production reaching 242.62 g per plant or 16.17 tons per hectare.

Additional Analysis

Provision of proper fertilizer is one important aspect in modern agriculture. In the context of corn production, appropriate fertilization not only supports plant growth but also affects the quality of crops. With the variation of fertilizer doses according to the production target, farmers can make appropriate adjustments to achieve the desired results.

The soil nutrient index becomes an important indicator in determining the success of fertilization. Although the results of this study indicate that the nutrient index has no significant effect, in-depth understanding of the soil conditions is still needed. Farmers should continue to conduct regular soil testing to monitor nutrient availability and optimize the use of fertilizer.

In practice, the integration between appropriate fertilization and good land management can provide maximum crop yields. In addition, the selection of superior varieties is also a key factor in achieving higher production targets. Thus, this research can be a reference for farmers and researchers to develop sustainable agricultural practices in corn production in Indonesia.

Conclusion

This study investigated the effect of providing fertilizers N, P, K, and Mg according to production target and nutrient index on corn production. The results showed that the highest dose of fertilizers was found in P4 treatment, but the soil nutrient index did not show a significant effect on the production of corn plants. The best interaction between production targets and nutrient indexes to increase factors of production lies in P4N2 treatment. This study provides valuable information for farmers and researchers to develop sustainable agricultural practices in corn production in Indonesia.
