The Effect of Audit Findings of the Financial Audit Agency, Government's Wealth, Size of Government and Leverage on the Performance of the Regency/City Regional Government in Indonesia

Introduction

The performance of local governments in Indonesia is a crucial indicator in assessing the effectiveness of existing resource management. The Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) plays a significant role in supervising the financial management of local governments through its audit findings. However, the impact of these findings on the performance of local governments is still unclear. This study aims to examine the effect of audit findings of the BPK, government wealth, government size, and leverage on the performance of the Regency/City Regional Government in Indonesia.

Background

The performance of local governments in Indonesia is influenced by various factors, including the management of government wealth, government size, and leverage. Government wealth refers to the total value of assets owned by the government, while government size refers to the capacity or structure of the government. Leverage, on the other hand, describes the use of debt by the government. The management of these factors can have a significant impact on the performance of local governments.

Methodology

This study used a quantitative approach to analyze the data. The population studied was all regency/city regional governments in Indonesia, while the research sample consisted of 47 local governments selected using the purposive sampling method. The data used in this study are secondary, and the data processing is carried out using SPSS software. The analysis method applied includes descriptive analysis, classical assumption test, multiple linear regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and coefficient of determination.

Results

The results of this study showed that the BPK and Leverage audit findings partially had no significant effect on the performance of the Regency/City Regional Government. On the other hand, government wealth has a negative influence on government performance, while government size shows a positive influence. Interestingly, when seen simultaneously, BPK audit findings, government assets, government size, and leverage have a significant influence on the financial performance of the district/city government in Indonesia.

Analysis and Explanation

The performance of local governments is an important indicator in assessing the effectiveness of existing resource management. The BPK audit findings function as a means of supervision, but if it is not followed up properly, the impact may be insignificant. Meanwhile, negative government wealth indicates that the management of existing assets may not be optimal, or even cause burdens that reduce performance efficiency.

The size of the government that has a positive effect shows that the greater the capacity or structure of government, the better the performance produced. This may be related to the government's ability to manage programs and budgets more effectively. On the other hand, leverage, which describes the use of debt, shows that excessive use of debt without good management can negatively affect performance.

Conclusion

Overall, the results of this study reflect the importance of transparent and accountable financial management. The local government needs to conduct an in-depth evaluation of audit findings and their impact, as well as formulating the right strategy in managing the wealth and size of government to achieve better performance. By integrating a deeper analysis related to the wealth and size of government, it is hoped that this research can make a positive contribution to the development of public policy at the regional level, for the achievement of efficient and effective government goals.

Improving the management of government wealth: Local governments need to improve the management of their assets to avoid negative impacts on performance.
Optimizing government size: Local governments need to optimize their capacity or structure to improve performance.
Managing leverage effectively: Local governments need to manage their debt effectively to avoid negative impacts on performance.
Conducting regular audit findings evaluation: Local governments need to conduct regular evaluation of audit findings to ensure that they are followed up properly.
Formulating a right strategy in managing wealth and size of government: Local governments need to formulate a right strategy in managing their wealth and size of government to achieve better performance.

Limitations

This study has several limitations, including:
