Introduction

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARI) are a significant health concern in the city of Medan, with a substantial increase in cases every year. In 2014, there were 168,607 cases, while in 2015, the figure fell slightly to 164,517 cases. The Socio-Economic Census (Susenas) in 2008 revealed that most households in North Sumatra (80.7%) live in residential conditions that are not dense and meet the requirements. However, 19.3% of households do not meet home health standards. This study aims to explore the relationship between the physical condition of the house and ARI complaints in the community, both in the coastal and land environment.

The increasing number of ARI cases in Medan is a pressing concern that requires attention from both the community and the government. The physical condition of a house plays a crucial role in maintaining public health, especially in preventing ARI. This study uses an observational approach with cross-sectional research techniques involving 60 respondents chosen randomly. Interestingly, there is a positive relationship between the condition of ventilation and humidity of the house with ARI complaints. This indicates that good ventilation and optimal humidity level are important factors in preventing ARI.

From the results of this study, there are several recommendations that are expected to improve public health, especially related to ARI. The community is expected to pay more attention to the physical aspects of their homes. This includes maintaining the condition of ventilation, lighting, humidity, and cleanliness of the floor, walls, and ceiling of the house. Some simple actions that can be done are opening the window every morning to let air circulation enter, routinely sweep and mop the floor, and clean dust from the walls and ceilings.

The government also has an important role in increasing public awareness about the importance of the physical condition of a healthy home. Development of counseling programs on home health and increasing access to information about ARI can help mitigate this problem. In addition, the government needs to increase the early awareness system related to ARI events by fostering community knowledge, attitudes, and behavior in maintaining the health of their home environment.

Conclusion

The combination of community behavior and good physical condition of a house can be an effective preventive measure to reduce the incidence of ARI in Medan, especially in Bagan Deli Village. By understanding and improving the condition of the home environment, it is expected that public health can be increased and the number of ARI cases can be significantly reduced in the future.
