Growth and Production of Ginger in the Giving of Enriched Agricultural Waste Compost

Introduction

Ginger is a plant that has been widely used for centuries as a spice and traditional medicine, with numerous pharmacological properties. As a result, ginger cultivation should be done organically, utilizing agricultural waste compost that is enriched and mycorrhizal. The right use of compost and mycorrhizal applications is crucial in ginger cultivation to obtain high results and improve rizom quality. In this study, we investigated the effect of enriched and mycorrhizal agricultural waste compost on the growth of ginger.

Research Methodology

The research was conducted at the experimental station of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of North Sumatra, Medan, from April to December 2009. The experimental design used was a random design group (rack) factorial with two factorial treatments. The first factor was an enriched agricultural waste compost (K), which consisted of various types of compost such as oil palm empty bunches, straw compost, and compost from coconut leaves. The second factor was mycorrhiza, which consisted of two treatments: without mycorrhizae (0 GSM/plant) and with mycorrhiza (75 GSM/Plant).

Results

The results showed that the use of compost had a significant effect on plant height at the ages of 2 and 3 months after transplantation, weight of rizom per plant, and weight rizom per plot. However, compost did not have a significant effect on several other parameters such as plant height in months 1, 4, and 5 after transplant, the number of leaves in months 1 to 5 after transplant, number of shoots, distance of plants to the first shoots, dry weight of stems, weight dry root, as well as the level of mycorrhizal infection.

On the other hand, the application of mycorrhiza had a significant effect on plant height in month 2 after transplantation and the level of mycorrhizal infection. However, mycorrhizae did not show a significant effect on other parameters such as plant height in months 1, 3, 4, and 5, number of leaves, number of shoots, dry weight of stems, root dry weight, and rizom weight per plant and per plot.

The interaction between compost and mycorrhiza showed a significant effect on the level of mycorrhizal infection, but did not have a significant effect on other parameters. This shows that both compost and mycorrhizae have an important role in supporting ginger growth, although the effect is different in various growth parameters.

Additional Analysis and Explanation

The use of agricultural waste compost provided additional benefits for the growth of ginger plants. Compost not only increases soil fertility but can also improve soil structure, improve water retention, and increase microbial activity that is beneficial for plants. In the context of sustainability, the use of compost also contributes to reducing agricultural waste.

Mycorrhiza, on the other hand, is a fungus that is symbiotic with plant roots and helps increase the absorption of nutrients, especially phosphorus, which is very important for plant growth. In ginger cultivation, mycorrhizal applications can improve plant health and productivity, although their effects may vary depending on environmental conditions and cultivation.

Conclusion

In sustainable agricultural practices, it is essential for farmers to understand the interaction between compost and mycorrhiza. With the use of proper compost and efficient mycorrhizal application, farmers can significantly increase ginger harvest yields, while maintaining the quality of rizom produced. Thus, an understanding of the application of this method will be very beneficial for farmers in achieving success in ginger cultivation.
