Introduction

Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.) are one of the most widely cultivated and consumed vegetables globally. They are a rich source of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The demand for cucumbers is increasing due to their health benefits and versatility in various cuisines. However, the production of high-quality cucumbers is often hindered by factors such as genetic variability, environmental conditions, and cultivation practices. Therefore, understanding the phenotypic and genetic parameters of cucumbers is crucial for developing superior varieties and improving production efficiency.

Materials and Methods

This study was conducted to investigate the phenotypic and genetic parameters of seven cucumber varieties, including Mercy, Hercules 56, Bima, Baron, Panda, Venus, and Local. The experiment was conducted in Medan, Indonesia, for three months, from May to July 2002, using a non-factorial random group design. The study aimed to identify the characteristics of phenotypic and genetic parameters in these cucumber varieties.

Phenotypic Analysis

The results of the phenotypic analysis showed that the Baron variety was superior in terms of fruit weight per plot, fruit weight per plant, and average weight per fruit compared to other varieties. Significant differences were also found in the number of fruit per plot between the Baron variety and other varieties. These findings suggest that the Baron variety has a higher potential for fruit production and quality.

Genetic Variability and Heritability

Further analysis of genetic variability showed that the first harvest age, average weight per fruit, and number of harvests had a narrow genetic variant. Conversely, the weight of the fruit per plot, weight of the fruit per plant, number of fruit per plot, and number of fruit per plant showed a broad genetic variant. These results indicate that the genetic variation in these characteristics is relatively low, suggesting that environmental factors may play a significant role in determining these traits.

High heritability values were found in the average weight per fruit, indicating a large genetic effect on this characteristic. Parameters such as first harvest age, fruit weight per plot, fruit weight per plant, number of fruit per plot, and number of fruit per plant had a moderate heritability value, indicating that both genetic and environmental factors are equally important in determining these traits. Meanwhile, the number of harvest times had a low heritability value, indicating that environmental factors are more dominant in determining this characteristic.

Implications and Recommendations

This study shows that the Baron variety has good potential to be developed as a superior variety. The high heritability value of the average weight per fruit indicates that genetic selection can effectively increase this characteristic in the Baron variety. Further research is needed to examine the influence of environmental factors on cucumber characteristics. This information can help in determining the right cultivation strategy to improve production efficiency and quality of cucumbers in the future.
