Introduction

Land is one of the most valuable natural resources for life, and its quality is significantly affected by the parent material. In this study, we focus on soil formed from the Dasit Tuff Material in Juhar Village, Juhar District, Karo Regency. Our primary objective is to identify the nature of the soil from the tuff and determine its land suitability for cocoa plants.

The Importance of Parent Material in Soil Formation

The parent material plays a crucial role in determining the characteristics of the soil. It is the source of the soil's mineral and organic matter, which in turn affects the soil's fertility, structure, and overall quality. In this study, we examine the Dasit Tuff Material as the parent material and its impact on the soil formed in Juhar Village.

Research Methods

In this study, a field study was conducted involving two pedons with different slopes, namely P1 with a slope of 21% and P2 with a slope of 11%. Each pedon was analyzed based on several parameters, including chemical, physics, morphology, mineralogy, and soil development. Data collection was done by observing the color of the soil, soil structure, soil consistency, and solum depth.

Field Observations and Laboratory Analysis

Field observations were conducted to collect data on the soil's physical and chemical properties. Laboratory analysis was further carried out to obtain data on soil texture, organic carbon content, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), cumulative nitrogen, total phosphorus, and clay minerals. Soil Horizon Sequence and Characteristics

The results showed that the sequence of soil horizon in Pedon P1 consisted of A, A.2, B W1, B1/2, and C. While in Pedon P2, Horizon Land consisted of A, B W1, B W2, B W3, and C. These findings indicate that the soil formed from the Dasit Tuff Material has a complex horizon sequence, which is characteristic of soils with a high degree of weathering.

Land Suitability for Cocoa Plants

Cocoa (Theobroma Cacao Q) is a plant that requires soil with certain characteristics in order to grow optimally. Some factors that affect land suitability for cocoa plants include soil pH, nutritional content, and soil structure. Based on the results of the study, soil with a dasit tuff parent material in Juhar Village shows good potential for cocoa growth.
