Protein Digestibility and Metabolic Energy of Starbio Fermented Palm Core Meal with Different Doses in Chickens

Introduction

The use of fermented feed ingredients has become increasingly popular in the poultry industry due to its potential to improve the nutritional value and digestibility of feed. One such fermented feed ingredient is palm core meal, which is a by-product of palm oil production. However, the protein digestibility and metabolic energy of palm core meal are often low, making it a less desirable feed ingredient for chickens. In this study, we examined the effect of Starbio, a microbial enzyme, on the fermentation of palm core meal and its impact on protein digestibility and metabolic energy in chickens.

Materials and Methods

This study was conducted at the Laboratory of the Livestock Study Program and Laboratory of the Bekasi Feed Quality Testing and Certification Center. A complete random design (RAL) with 5 treatments and 4 replications was used. The treatments given were:

P0: Without Starbio
P1: 0.25% Starbio
P2: 0.5% Starbio
P3: 0.75% Starbio
P4: 1% Starbio

The parameters measured in this study included protein digestibility, nitrogen retention, and metabolic energy.

Results

The results showed that Starbio administration had a significant effect (p <0.01) on increasing protein digestibility and metabolic energy in chickens. The higher the Starbio dose given, up to 1%, the higher the digestibility of protein and metabolic energy obtained. This shows that the use of Starbio in fermentation of palm kernel meal is effective in improving the quality of feed for chickens.
