Introduction

Train accidents have become a serious problem in recent years, causing loss of life and property. Various factors contribute to these incidents, including human errors and environmental conditions. Among all the factors causing train accidents, human error, especially those from train operators, are the main causes. One important aspect of human error is the behavior of machinists when running the train. This study aims to describe the behavior of machinists related to the function of the doorstops and crossing doors on the Medan - Kisaran route, using quantitative descriptive methods.

Background of the Study

The Medan - Kisaran route is one of the busiest train routes in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The route passes through various types of terrain, including urban and rural areas, and is prone to accidents. Train accidents on this route have resulted in significant loss of life and property, highlighting the need for improved safety measures. The behavior of machinists plays a crucial role in preventing train accidents, as they are responsible for operating the train and ensuring the safety of passengers.

Research Methods

In this study, researchers took a sample of 65 machinists working at PT Kereta Api (Persero) Divre 1 North Sumatra. Quantitative descriptive methods were used to collect data and analyze machinist behavior. This study includes the measurement of the level of knowledge, attitudes, and actions of machinists obtained through direct observations. The researchers used a questionnaire to collect data on the level of knowledge and attitudes of machinists, while direct observations were used to assess their actions.

Research Results

The results showed that the level of machinist knowledge about the function of the doorstop and crossing doors was quite good, with 52 of 65 machinists (80.0%) having adequate knowledge. In terms of attitude, all respondents (100%) showed a positive attitude towards safety at the railroad crossing. However, when observed directly, only 3 of 5 machinists (60.0%) could be categorized as taking action in accordance with applicable knowledge and regulations.

From the results of the research above, it appears that although the level of knowledge and the attitude of the machinist is classified as good, their actions still need to be improved. This indicates the existence of a gap between knowledge and practice in the field. One of the causes may be psychological and pressure factors while on duty, where the machinist may experience stress or time constraints that affect their performance. Additionally, the lack of effective supervision by the railroad management may also contribute to the gap between knowledge and practice.
