Introduction

Nutritional status is a crucial indicator of children's health, and it is essential to pay serious attention to improving the nutritional status of toddlers, especially those who experience malnutrition. In this context, the Medan City Government launched an innovative program known as the collection of jimpitan rice, which involves all Civil Servants (PNS) in the Medan City Government environment. This program aims to distribute rice to families in need, but does it have a significant impact on the weight gain of children under five who suffer from malnutrition? This study aims to identify the factors that affect the weight gain of toddlers who experience nutrition Lack of, especially among families who receive and do not receive stimulant rice.

Background

Malnutrition is a significant public health problem in many parts of the world, including Indonesia. Children under five are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition, which can lead to stunted growth, weakened immune systems, and even death. In Medan City, the government has launched various programs to address malnutrition, including the collection of jimpitan rice. However, the effectiveness of this program in improving the nutritional status of children under five is still unclear.

Research Methodology

This study uses a cross-sectional design involving 104 children under five sufferers of malnutrition. Of this number, 52 children received jimped rice, while 52 other children did not accept. The variables studied include eating patterns, mother's education, mother's knowledge, mother's work, and history of infectious diseases. Data analysis was carried out using the Chi-Square test to identify the relationship between variables.

Research Result

The results showed that several factors, such as maternal knowledge, history of respiratory tract infections, history of diarrhea, and food intake which included energy, protein, and fat sources, had a significant effect on weight gaining under five people with malnutrition sufferers in both groups. Interestingly, the most dominant factor contributing to weight gain to groups receiving jimpitan rice is fat intake, with an Exp (B) value of 19,158. Meanwhile, for groups that do not receive stimulant rice, the dominant factor that affects weight gain is protein intake, with an Exp (B) value of 28,495.

Analysis and Implications

These findings provide important insight into the importance of balanced nutrition for children's growth. Mother's knowledge and awareness about nutrition is very instrumental in determining food choices that will be given to children. Therefore, education to mothers about healthy and nutritious diet must be a priority. In addition, history of diseases such as ARI and diarrhea shows that children's health is not only influenced by nutritional intake, but also by health factors. Therefore, it is essential for the community to pay attention to overall health, including maintaining environmental cleanliness and access to health services.

Conclusion

It is hoped that the Medan City Government will continue to continue the rice program and evaluate the success of the program. The community is also expected to be active in monitoring the nutritional status of their children and ensuring the collection of stimulating rice on time. The collective effort between the government and the community is the key to improving the nutritional status of children and supporting their growth towards a healthier generation.
