Introduction

The intensive use of land and the utilization of vacant land in Kotanopan District, Mandailing Natal Regency, is a crucial step in supporting agricultural programs. This step is expected to help realize food independence, especially in the district. In this context, the use of vacant land, which is often referred to as other use areas, needs to be supported by information about land suitability. Land suitability is a critical factor in determining the potential of land for agricultural development, and it plays a vital role in ensuring the success of farming activities.

For this reason, an evaluation of the characteristics of land suitability in this area has been carried out with the aim of analyzing various improvement efforts so that land productivity can be increased. In addition, this study also aims to make an actual land suitability map and potential land suitability map for industrial commodities in Kotanopan District. The evaluation of land suitability is essential in identifying the types of industrial crops that are suitable to be developed in the region, which can help in increasing agricultural productivity and supporting food independence.

Methodology

The method used in this study is a survey method. Researchers use various maps, such as land maps, slope slope maps, place maps, and land cover maps, and conduct surveys directly to the field. From this activity, 15 land units and 30 measurement points were produced. The analysis method applied is a matching to determine the level of land suitability. This method involves comparing the characteristics of the land with the requirements of the industrial crops to be developed.

Results

The results showed that the level of land suitability for cocoa plants (Theobroma Cacao L.) was included in the class according to marginal (S3) with an area of 70,461.13 ha. Likewise with Arabica coffee plants (Coffea Arabica L.) which are also included in the class according to marginal (S3) with an area of 11,658.30 ha and inappropriate area (n) covering an area of 54,312.14 ha. In addition, the rubber plant (Hevea Brasiliensis M.A.) is also included in the class according to marginal (S3) with an area of 66,054.22 ha and inappropriate area (n) covering 4,406.91 ha.

The importance of evaluating land suitability in the context of agriculture cannot be underestimated. This study provides a clear picture of the potential of land in Kotanopan District, as well as showing the type of industrial crop that is suitable to be developed in the region. With this information, farmers and stakeholders can plan and implement land management strategies more effectively.

Farmers can prioritize the types of plants that are in accordance with the characteristics of their land, thereby increasing the possibility of success in farming. With the increase in agricultural productivity, there will be an increase in income for farmers, which can contribute to improving the quality of life of the community in Kotanopan District.
